The Commission is especially conscious of the inter-relationship of many uni We have consulted widely with universities and with Government authorities in the preparation of the Report, and have taken account of the broad objectives of Government policy where these impinge on the Commission’s responsibilities. We have been mindful of this responsibility in framing the recommendations which are now put before you. Under the Universities Commission A ct 1959-1974, the Commission is enjoined to perform its functions with a view to promoting the balanced develop ment of universities so that their resources can be used to the greatest possible advantage of Australia. The Report examines some of the main issues relating to the present working and future development of the Australian universities and incorporates the Com mission’s recommendations on financial assistance to them for the 1976-78 We submit to you the Sixth Report of the Universities Commission.
